United Methodist Women

United Methodist Women is a community of women who know God and experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; develop creative, supportive fellowship; and expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the United Methodist Church.

You can be part of the UMW by:
  • participating in the general meetings (four per year) for study, fellowship and service
  • joining one of six Fellowships, each consisting of 15-20 women who hold monthly meetings from September through May
  • taking part in UMW outreach ministries, such as preparing UMCOR kits (Clean-Up Kits, School Kits, Sewing Kits, and Health Kits)
  • joining other UMW members in preparing and serving a dinner to students at Wesley Theological Seminary
  • making a financial pledge to UMW in support of missions around the world
Fellowship Meetings

A Fellowship is a way to meet new friends, grow spiritually, participate in service events, and connect with other people and activities at Mount Olivet. To the right is a list of UMW fellowships and their monthly meeting times – we invite you to visit! For more information about UMW or a particular fellowship, please contact UMW President
Mary Bell at 703.528.0570 or call the church office at 703.527.3934.

The Undertaker's Wife

The Undertaker’s Wife gives new meaning to the term “living above the store” – when that store happens to be a funeral home. When Celia Hastings married her husband, John, whose family owned a small-town funeral home, she thought she was going to live the life of an Air Force spouse. However, it didn’t work out that way. Ten years later, the man she married became the head of the family business. This book tells the story of how she changed from someone who was uncomfortable with the idea of death to someone who officiates at funerals and plays the organ. Along the way, she attained a master’s degree in religious education from Western Theological Seminary and became a published author. The book is full of her faith-filled stories of the people and situations she has encountered in this unusual line of work, some humorous, some touching, but all permeated with God’s grace. She also offers a wealth of practical information about planning and holding a funeral, and dealing with grief.
